Reverse the Flow of Data Warehouse Design to Ensure Success

For most IT shops, people feel more comfortable starting the data warehouse design with foundational technology. Then the next step is for the practioners to work forward though database design and finally arrive at end user requirements. In this webinar Dr. Kimball will argue that this approach is exactly backward and is likely to fail. A far better approach is to start at the end users’ screens, understand what they need to see, and then systematically work backward, finally arriving at the technology. Dr. Kimball will carefully describe the steps in this “backward” approach, showing the criteria for success and the litmus tests to identify risks.

At the end of the session, Steve Dulzer of Informatica will present the overview and benefits of Informatica Velocity, the data warehousing methodology founded upon over 13 years of real-life implementations.

Ralph Kimball founded the Kimball Group. Since the mid 1980’s he has been the data warehouse/business intelligence (DW/BI) industry’s thought leader on the dimensional approach and trained more than 10,000 IT professionals. Prior to working at Metaphor and founding Red Brick Systems, Ralph co-invented the Star workstation at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). Ralph has his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

Steve Dulzer is Director of the Informatica Professional Services SEAL team. Among other responsibilities, the SEAL team owns and maintains the Informatica Professional Services Velocity Methodology which is a proven field methodology for developing data integration projects including Data Warehouses. Velocity has been utilized by hundreds of Informatica customers over the past 9 years to provide a practical real world guide to implementing data integration projects specifically using Informatica technology.
